What is Word Frontier?
Most word games sit you at a small board and make you wait your turn. Word Frontier throws that out. You play your words on an endless board using any letters you have, with no turns. Words from other players appear live in front of you, and the board grows as the competition gets fierce.
The result is a word game with the depth of a classic word tile game, the pace and excitement of a real-time competition, and a layer of strategy all its own: collectible powerups, territory you can claim, and hidden traps.
The Objective
Score more points than everyone else before the game ends. You score by placing valid words on the board. Explore the board and battle for space. Claim powerups to pull ahead and watch your name climb the live leaderboard.
Game Modes
There are three public game modes. Play at the pace you want, or freely switch between them and play them all!
Weekly
A slower, strategic marathon. Plan ahead, play the long game.
- New game every Sunday, 12 PM EST
- +1 tile every 5 minutes
Daily
A medium-paced race that turns over fresh once a day.
- New game daily, 12 PM EST
- +1 tile every minute
Blitz
Fast and frantic, with no waiting for letters at all.
- New game every 6 hours
- Rack stays full the whole game
Prefer to play just with people you know? Skip the public games and spin up an invite-only Private Game with your own rules.
Playing Your First Word
🎓 New here? The fastest way to learn is by playing. Our free interactive tutorial walks you through your first word, your first powerup, and expanding the board, hands-on, in about two minutes. It is the single best way to get a feel for the game. Launch the tutorial →
Prefer to read first? Here's the whole flow in four steps.
- Check your rack. You hold up to ten letter tiles in the Rack at the bottom of the screen. Extra tiles wait in your 🎒 Stash, and a countdown shows when your next letter arrives.
- Place letters on the board. Drag a tile onto the grid, or tap a letter and then tap an empty space. Your word must read in a single straight line, either left-to-right or top-to-bottom, the way words cross in a crossword.
- Connect to what's already there. Each word has to touch existing tiles on the board. Word Frontier automatically reads the full word your tiles form together with the letters already on the grid, in both directions, so one clever placement can complete several words at once.
- Submit. If it's a real word in the dictionary, it's accepted and you score instantly. Since everyone plays at once, the first valid word to a contested space wins, so don't sit on a great play too long.
Scoring
Every letter tile carries a point value, so longer words and rarer letters score more. Because you are building on the same board as everyone else, a single placement that forms two or three words at once scores all of them. Look for powerups that can bend the math in your favor.
The Rack & Stash
Your rack holds ten active tiles. Behind it, your Stash holds the overflow. The game grants you fresh letters on a timer, and your rack refills automatically from the Stash as you spend tiles, so you are never fully stuck. Short on the right letter? Powerups like Prospect, Bonanza, Forge, and Glyph let you dig for or outright choose the letter you need.
New letters land here and top up your rack automatically.
One exception: Blitz games have no Stash. Because Blitz never makes you wait for letters, your rack simply stays topped up to ten for the whole game.
An Infinite Board
A fresh game board starts with 9 regions arranged in a 3 by 3 grid. When a word is played at the edge of a region, the next region is unlocked. Expand the board and explore it for game-changing powerups. Chain words together to claim these treasures before anyone else can.
Powerups
Scattered across the board are powerup spaces. Play a word over one to claim the powerup before anyone else does. There are over two dozen, sorted into rarity tiers. Some are single-use, some are permanent passives, and the rarest are extraordinarily hard to find. A taste of what's out there:
Navigates to a valid play and highlights the tiles you need.
Sift through 5 random tiles and keep the one you want.
Jump up to 5 tiles from your Stash to the front of the line.
Mark a tile; any word played through it scores 2×.
Trade in up to 5 letters from your rack for new ones.
Destroys every tile in a 3×3 area. Powered-up tiles (Beacon, Double-Up, Heist) are immune.
Hide a trap. If a rival lands there, their points are yours.
Steal a tile from the board; it turns red and becomes immune to attacks.
Play a word anywhere; one tile becomes a permanent glowing Beacon.
Unlock a golden Bonus Rack of 4 extra tile slots.
A permanent passive: your Stash capacity grows by 25 tiles. Stackable.
A permanent passive: collect two tiles on every grant timer instead of one.
…and many more, including some so rare most players never see them. Tap ? in-game anytime for the full Powerup Guide.
Powerups you claim collect in your inventory. Tap the ⚡ button to open it, pick a powerup to see what it does, then play it. Try it here:

Mega Zones
Every so often a region of the board lights up as a Mega Zone: a special area with its own benefits. There are three kinds so far.
⚡ 2× Score
Every word you play inside the zone scores double while it is active. Combine this with the Double-Up powerup for crazy points!
⛏️ Prospect Frenzy
The whole zone fills with Prospect powerups. Blanket it with words to claim a pile of Prospects, each letting you sift through 5 tiles and keep the one you want.
🏺 Labyrinth
A walled maze whose corridors narrow toward the center. Work your words inward to reach the Cornucopia at its heart: a mythical prize that hands you a hoard of the game's best powerups at once.
The Mega Zone button in-game jumps you through a rotation of every active Mega Zone. Keep an eye out!
Royal Tax Territories
Royal Tax is a Mythical powerup that lets you claim one region of the board as your territory. Claimed regions show a crown and their owner's name. Anyone can still play there, and it pays to:
🧱 Everyone who builds there
Earns +1 for every tile placed inside the territory, on top of the word's score. The owner earns it too, on their own land.
👑 The owner
Also collects +1 for every word another player plays in the territory.
The tile bonus is never doubled, and a Snare can't steal it. Mega Zones can't be claimed. Right-click (or long-press) any region to see who owns it.
Play With Friends: Private Games
Don't want to play with a crowd of strangers? Spin up an invite-only Private Game and play only with the people you invite. You set the table:
🎯 Your win condition
Race to a target score, or play for the top score when the clock runs out. First to 1,000 points? Highest after 30 minutes? Your call.
🎛️ Your rules
Not a fan of a certain powerup? Switch it off. Want the board crawling with Mega Zones? Turn them up.
🤝 Your crew
Only the friends you invite can join, so the whole board is yours to build on together, or against each other.
How do I add friends?
- Sign in first. The friend system needs an account (Google, Discord, or Facebook). Guests can't add friends or be added.
- Open a player's profile. Tap another player's name, for example from the leaderboard, to open their profile.
- Send the request. Hit + Add friend on their profile. They'll see your request on their Friends page.
- They accept. Once they tap Accept, you're connected, and you can invite each other to Private Games.
When a Game Ends
Every game has a finish line. When the timer runs out (or a Private Game hits its target score), play stops and a Final Results screen slides in with the closing leaderboard and how you stacked up.

Trophies
Climbing the leaderboard isn't the only way to play. Word Frontier hides more than 80 trophies to unlock: a career-long challenge for the completionists. They stay with you across every game and mode, from your very first word to feats only a dedicated wordsmith will ever pull off.
🏆 First Fiver
Play a word of five or more letters.
🏆 Vowel Drought
Play a word with no vowels at all.
🏆 Mirror Image
Play a palindrome.
…and many more waiting to be discovered. Track your collection any time on your Player Profile Page.
Levels, XP and Streaks
Everything you do on the frontier earns XP, in every game and mode. XP never resets, and it raises your level, shown beside your name on the leaderboard, your Player Profile Page, and your friends list.
✍️ Play words
Each word earns its base score as XP, before Double Score, Mega Zone, or Super Word multipliers, plus a bonus for words of six or more letters.
✨ Claim and use powerups
Claiming a powerup space earns more XP the rarer it is. Using a powerup earns XP too.
🔥 Keep a daily streak
Play at least one word a day to keep your streak going. Your first word each day earns 10 XP for every day of your streak, up to 70.
A streak day ends at midnight on your device's clock, wherever you are. Guests don't keep a streak, so sign in to start one.
Tips to Climb the Leaderboard
Build off other players. Everyone builds on the same board, so hook your words onto existing tiles to score two or three words from a single placement.
Grab powerups early. Powerup spaces are first-come, first-served. If you see one within reach, take it before a rival does.
Ride the Mega Zones. When a region lights up as a 2× Score zone, pour your best words into it, and stack a Double-Up on top for a massive swing.
Build in territories. Every tile you place in a Royal Tax territory is +1 for you, whoever owns it.
Play the frontier. Can't find a play in the crowded center? Pan out to open space where you control the board.

Do I have to wait for my turn?
Never. Word Frontier has no turns. You place words the moment you have letters, and you watch everyone else's words appear live as they play.
Can I play with friends?
Yes. Private games let you invite friends directly and choose the win condition: a target score, or the highest score when time runs out.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes. Word Frontier plays in any modern browser on phones, tablets, and desktops. Drag tiles or tap-to-place, whichever you prefer.
What words are allowed?
Word Frontier uses a generous, expansive dictionary, so the vast majority of real words you can think of are fair game. It isn't set in stone, either: the word list keeps evolving alongside the game, guided by player feedback.
What if the game is missing a word?
If a word you know is real gets rejected, tell us. Open the ? (Help) menu in-game and choose Suggest a Word, then submit it with the Add to dictionary action. Our team reviews suggestions as we keep growing the word list.
I saw a word played that I don't think is real. Can I flag it?
Absolutely. Use the same ? (Help) menu → Suggest a Word, this time choosing the Remove (not real) action. Every report helps us refine the dictionary over time.
